How Insight is Facilitating Roy Hill’s Modernisation Efforts
Solutions integrator Insight was recently engaged by Roy Hill to look after its ongoing integration asset replacement and modernisation programme

Based out of Chandler, Arizona, Insight bills itself as the leading solutions integrator and is assisting countless clients on their digital transformation journeys.

This Fortune 500 giant helps companies across the globe to solve their most pressing business problems, utilising its own capabilities in security, data and AI, intelligent edge, modern applications, infrastructure, workplace services and much more.

One of those benefitting from Insight’s invaluable expertise is Roy Hill, a world-class integrated iron ore mining, rail and port operation in Western Australia.

The pair have a longstanding relationship which has involved Insight building Roy Hill’s critical pit supervisor application, designed to assess fitness for work and ensure proceedings run like clockwork.

Since then, Insight has stepped in to play a key role in delivering a range of innovative solutions that enable Roy Hill to improve its operational efficiency, productivity, and performance.

Solving complex problems

One might ask why Insight is uniquely positioned to help Roy Hill drive better business outcomes.

Veli-Matti Vanamo, the organisation’s CTO for the APAC region, recalls being asked such a question by Roy Hill’s then-CIO when their partnership first began.

“My answer was the same as it is today,” asserts Vanamo. “Insight has unique capabilities and skills in the region working collaboratively with the client, but with the benefit of having over 14,000 technical experts from our global pool of talent who can help solve complex problems.

“We work with the client by making our unique IP available for them to utilise in their projects to move faster, reduce costs and bring certainty.”

He adds: “When it came to our first engagement with Roy Hill, the pit supervisor application, we brought our frameworks, our kits, the way we work, but also our accelerator code for mobile workforce management, and used that to deliver the project very quickly, which is what we’ve continued to do ever since.”

The partnership has seen Insight build Roy Hill’s Azure and AI platforms, deliver their integration platform, and manage their Microsoft Enterprise License agreement. As their solutions integrator partner, Insight provides end-to-end support to drive Roy Hill's success.

“Insight has played a crucial role in helping Roy Hill drive better business outcomes,” adds Kate Flanagan,  Executive GM IM & Technology at Roy Hill.

Strengthening the partnership

The partnership has also fostered a culture of innovation and collaboration, and has created new opportunities for growth and value creation.

Insight was recently engaged by Roy Hill to assist with the modernisation and redevelopment of existing integrations currently hosted in its SAP system, and is taking a multi-phase approach.

The initial phase saw Insight leverage Azure Integration Services to provide a turn-key solution that is modern, secure, and cost effective. This process was aided by the Insight Path accelerator, a secure, network-isolated environment for developing AIS integrations that also provides a rich, DevOps-templated scaffolding approach to the developer experience.

“Roy Hill is seeing ROI in the speed they can initialise new integrations,” says Peter Shaw, Team Lead for Modern Applications at Insight. “This takes the focus of the developer away from the undifferentiated heavy lifting, solely focusing on the integration’s functional requirements.

“In phase two we’ll work to conduct an extensive integration catalogue assessment to find the candidates and estimates for the phase two backlog, and we’ll see the first bulk of the integration workloads.

“Leveraging our multi-region skillsets gives us the ability to scale, and we're working closely with Insight teammates to strengthen that partnership.”
