The success of this solution inspire us to continue pushing the boundaries of IoT for a safer & more efficient world says Olivier Hersent, Actility CEO

As mining accidents caused by blasts, collapses, and landslides rise 29%, major copper project Mina Justa in Peru is embracing IoT technology to set new standards in worker safety within the mining industry.

Operation technology, and convergence with information technology company StraconTech — a tech wing of the STRACON group — has collaborated with IoT tracking specialists Abeeway and IoT connectivity solution experts Actility to develop an innovative IoT worker safety solution for the major mining project.

IoT boosting safety in blast zones

The technological solution for the safety of the mine workers is based on real-time and historical tracking of people in blasting zones to mitigate work accidents and enhance operational efficiency. The solution utilises LoRaWAN connectivity, which reduces costs whilst boosting coverage.

“The project at Mina Justa is not only a technological achievement but also a testament to our commitment to customer satisfaction,” says Jonathan Prieto Abasolo, Chief Technology Officer at STRACON Technologies.

Abasolo has been STRACON Technologies’ CTO since 2023, having previously joined the company as Head of Automation in 2022. He previously worked in robotic process automation at PWC.

“We are proud to have partnered with them and to have delivered a solution that significantly improves the safety of mine workers. We are grateful for the support of our strategic partners, Actility and Abeeway, who played crucial roles in the success of this project.”

“It’s gratifying to see our technology contributing to the significant enhancement of worker safety at Mina Justa,” shares Olivier Hersent, CEO and Founder of Actility.

Hersent is passionate about improved functionality, and in reflection of this his career is based on communication technologies with a focus on IP based networks. He founded Actility in 2010, having previously founded NetCentrex, a leading provider of VoIP infrastructure, and serving as CTO of Comverse group after its acquisition of NetCentrex.

As a recognised telecom and technology expert, he has written several books on networking technology, VoIP, M2M, Internet of Things(IoT) and the Smart Grid, and authored six international patents. He received the Blondel scientific medal from Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Information Technology and Communication Association (SEE) in 2012, and was made a Knight of the French Order “Legion of Honor” in 2018.

“This project exemplifies the power of collaboration and innovation. The success and expansion of this solution inspire us to continue pushing the boundaries of IoT for a safer and more efficient world.”
