There are hobbyists and then there are fanatics. Jason Hatala can be categorized as both.

The machinist and fabricator, who also has a fondness for 3-D printing, recently unveiled his latest creation: a radio-controlled Caterpillar D10 bulldozer made almost entirely from 3-D printing.

"I am a member of RC Truck and Construction and enjoy building scale construction equipment,” Hatala said in an interview with 3DPrint.com.

“3D printing, which I have been involved in for 4 years, has allowed me to take model building to the next step in detail and ease. I use a simple CAD program like Autodesk to design, and I use two Afinia H479s currently [to 3D print my designs with].”

To replicate the Caterpillar bulldozer, it took Hatala 10 days to design all of the 3-D printable files for the tractor, and two weeks to 3-D print the additional 270 separate parts. The only portion not 3-D printed were the track pins, which hold the 90 separate track pads, and the electronic components used to operate the remote-controlled vehicle.

According to 3DPrinting.com, Hatala is currently planning to build a 1:14 scale remote-controlled 1963 Euclide R45 Dump Truck as well as a Caterpillar 657 Scraper.
