Caterpillar AI Collaboration On Mining And Construction

Caterpillar will collaborate with US based general purpose robot supplier FieldAI to collect real data points from industrial environments.
This collaboration combines Caterpillar's deep industry expertise, engineering capabilities and operational data with FieldAI's AI-enabled robot foundation models to autonomously operate across complex jobsites and manufacturing environments.

Rather than relying on machines that are remote controlled or pre-programmed for a limited range of tasks and routes, Caterpillar expects to benefit from the deployment of FieldAI’s solutions in complex, dynamic industrial environments.
Caterpillar indicates early applications to include:
- Autonomous inspections to improve safety and operational visibility.
- Jobsite and facility digital twins that provide real-time insights into equipment, infrastructure and operations.
- Enhanced situational awareness to help identify potential risks sooner and support faster, more informed decision-making.
- Operational optimisation that improves efficiency through simulation, automation and AI-driven insights.

Caterpillarās jobsite of the future initiative
Caterpillar announced that it was rolling out the expansion of autonomous technology in its business unit serving the construction market in January 2026, targeting the introduction of autonomous product lines in the following segments:
- Excavators: Autonomous trenching, loading, grading and more.
- Loaders: Material handling and truck loading, powered by autonomous navigation and real-time data processing.
- Haul Trucks: Off-road machines that carry and distribute massive amounts of materials like rock, soil and minerals.
- Dozers: Precision grading and earthmoving for optimal efficiency.
- Compactors: Automated surface preparation, ensuring consistent quality and safety for construction.
- Site Optimisation: Cat VisionLink and Cat MineStar site systems connect fleets and enable coordinated, intelligent operations across the jobsite.
FieldAI will build up industrial environment data
The company's technology is built on what it calls Field Foundation Models, which combine data-driven AI with physics-based reasoning to let robots operate without pre-mapped routes or supporting infrastructure.
FieldAI has expanded the use of NVIDIA Omniverse libraries since March 2026 to support three-dimensional reconstruction of high-fidelity digital twins. This leverages the recent deeper integration between Microsoft Fabric and NVIDIA's NVIDIA Omniverse libraries, connecting live operational data with physically accurate digital twins and simulation.
Caterpillar deepened its existing collaboration with NVIDIA relating to the use of AI in the mining sector in January 2026.
FieldAI expects the collaboration with Caterpillar to lead to the development of greater insight into industrial environments that were once thought to be too unpredictable for robots ā from active construction sites where conditions change hourly to mining and energy operations with extreme conditions, limited access, and complex infrastructure.
FieldAI itself raised US$405m in funding in August 2025, backed by investors including Bezos Expeditions, NVIDIA's venture arm and Bill Gates' Gates Frontier.
