At the start of Falk’s history is Herman Falk, the son of Milwaukee brewer Franz Falk. After the Falk family sold its stake in brewing to what would become the Pabst Brewing Company, Herman chose a different path for himself. Rather than remaining in the brewing business, he established a small machine shop in Milwaukee during the 1890s, taking on a variety of mechanical and manufacturing projects.

Similar to many entrepreneurs of the time, Falk continually adapted to emerging opportunities in the area. His company manufactured wagon couplings, produced stage equipment for Pabst Theater, worked on developing railroad infrastructure and experimented with innovations in power transmission. The defining moment in Falk’s history came at the beginning of the 20th century as industrial facilities were increasingly moving to electric motors. While electric motors at the time offered significant advantages over steam-powered solutions, they often operated at speeds too high for direct use in industrial machinery. Recognising the opportunities ahead, Falk expanded into gear manufacturing and acquired Western Gear, helping establish a strong foundation for what would become one of the most respected names in industrial power transmission. By 1911, the company had introduced precision herringbone gearing technology, which was a significant advancement that helped shape Falk’s future and positioned the company as a leader in heavy-duty industrial gearing.

As industrialisation accelerated, Falk gear drives found their way into applications that powered economic growth, such as ore crushers, steel rollers, electricity generation, raw materials processing and material handling through manufacturing facilities. This resulted in a product design to meet modern operational demands, while simultaneously preserving the qualities that cemented Falk’s reputation in the industry.
