Canadian developer Rock Tech Lithium is collaborating with Siemens Canada to develop a digital process twin of its Red Rock converter project in Ontario

Siemens Canada has inked a contract with Rock Tech to provide a digital process twin to support an ongoing definitive feasibility study for its Red Rock lithium converter project in Ontario.

“The partnership with Siemens strengthens German-Canadian cooperation and supports Rock Tech's objective of establishing the Red Rock Converter as a strategic contributor to resilient G7 critical minerals supply chains,” says Rock Tech CEO Mirco Wojnarowicz.

Siemens Canada will initially implement a digital process twin, but the two parties plan to extend the Digital Twin technology to cover the entire project lifecycle: from the feasibility study through engineering and construction to operations.

Siemens' Digital Twin technology creates a virtual, physics-based model of the plant's processes, energy flows, and material streams, enabling Rock Tech to test, optimise, and validate design choices, efficiency, emissions, and operational reliability before major capital is committed.

The award sits within a broader memorandum of understanding signed between the developer and Siemens Canada in March, which is designed to bring German lithium conversion expertise and industrial digitalisation technology to the Red Rock converter project.

Siemens Canada will also support Rock Tech's project team by providing specialised support in Process Control, Instrumentation and Automation Architecture as part of the ongoing DFS for the Red Rock Converter. The DFS was launched at the end of June 2026 and is expected to be finalised by mid-December 2026.

Rock Tech’s lithium projects

Lithium is a foundational material for electrification, renewable power generation and electric vehicles, making it a priority commodity for companies positioning themselves for the energy transition.

Rock Tech is developing domestic supply chains of locally produced lithium in Germany and in Canada to supply battery and automotive industries with battery grade material sourced from sustainable value chains. The company is developing two lithium converter projects: the first in Guben, Germany is intended to produce up to 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate per year and the second in Red Rock, Ontario, is intended to produce up to 32,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent per year.

Rock Tech Lithium plans to source raw material from its own Georgia Lake spodumene mining project in the Thunder Bay Mining District of Ontario.
