The Evolution of Epiroc’s Deep Automation Solution
Mining equipment supplier Epiroc has announced that it has extended the scope of the autonomous service offered to customers as part of its Deep Automation autonomous operation service.
Epiroc’s Deep Automation is a set of systems and applications that allow customers to orchestrate the underground material handling flow. Customers can use the OEM-agnostic software to coordinate the operation of automated trucks and loaders simultaneously underground.
However, until now the software solution has been restricted to underground solutions, creating management system frictions when material reaches the surface.
Epiroc has now extended the scope of the autonomous operation solution to surface operations. By transitioning away from 2D to 3D LiDAR localisation, the solution allows mapping and obstacle detection in surface environments.
“Trucks are the natural starting point for this technology, given their long operating distances and the fact that their operating cycles often extend from underground production areas to surface dumping locations,” says Johannes Mutamba, Global Product Manager Deep Automation – Trucks, at Epiroc’s Underground division.
Johannes notes that extending the scope of Deep Automation to act as a common system for automated underground and surface hauling, with advanced obstacle detection, creates opportunities for the solution to be extended to other machine types in the future.
Above ground challenges
“Surface environments present unique challenges compared to underground operations due to fewer positioning references and changing weather conditions,” says Robert Lundh, Automation Specialist at Epiroc’s Underground division.
“By moving from traditional 2D sensors to a 3D LiDAR system, we improve environmental awareness and get more reliable positioning.”
The company demonstrated the solution for customers at its Epiroc World Expo event in June 2026. A battery-electric mine truck equipped with the solution automatically detected and stopped for obstacles placed in its path, demonstrating its built-in safety capabilities.
Deep Automation
Epiroc’s Deep Automation remote operation service permits machinery to collaborate on shared tasks, and also improves underground movement scheduling, as the system seeks to maximise overall efficiency.
The service helps to reduce collisions, minimise equipment damage, improve downtime and reduce repair costs.
Epiroc’s Deep Autonomy is compatible with its Minetruck MT54 S and MT65 S models, which can be supplied automation-ready, while many of its underground Scooptram loader models are also compatible with the system.
