200 jobs on order as Glencore restarts Collinsville Coal Mine

More than 200 jobs to fill as Glencore looks to restart the Collinsville Coal Mine.

Production at Collinsville had been scaled back due to the lower coal prices, which were a result of oversupply in the global export market.

Now, following an increased demand from South-East Asia for the specific type of coal produced by Collinsville, Glencore is now looking to restart production at the site.

“Our Collinsville mine has made material progress in increasing operational efficiencies and reducing costs in the current market and the decision to return to production is positive news for the local community and the wider region,” said Tony Galvin, head of Glencore’s open pit business in Queensland.

Collinsville Open Cut Mine

The Collinsville Open Cut is the oldest coal mine in Queensland, having been discovered in 1866 and underground mining officially commencing in 1919.

Glencore officially acquired Mt Isa Mines, who owned the mine, in 2003.

In 2015, 2.6 million tonnes of saleable coal was produced at the site and, according to the company’s fact sheet, so far in 2016 0.971 million tonnes has been produced to date.

At the Collinsville site, the current fleet contains two draglines, three excavators and a fleet of 777 and 793 trucks.
