Lucapa Diamonds and the 172 carat diamond
2016 has been a good year for Lucapa Diamonds.
This is exemplified in the latest announcement that the Australian based diamond company has discovered an exceptional 172.67 carat diamond from its Lulo Diamond project in Angola.
No big deal, except that it is – this latest find means that Lucapa has now discovered six (yes SIX) 100 plus carat diamonds in 2016.
So yes, 2016 has been a good year for Lucapa.
The Lulo Diamond project is located in Angola’s Lunda Norte diamond heartland. It is around 630km east of the Angolian capital of Luanda.
Lucapa has been actively exploring at the site since 2008, with alluvial diamond mining beginning in January 2015.
Through alluvial mining, Lucapa uncovered the 404 carat diamond in February 2016, the largest diamond ever found in Angola and the 27th largest diamond in the world.
Not to be overshadowed, the latest 172 carat diamond is the second largest diamond to be found in Angola.
Lucapa is a regular recoverer of large specials, which are single diamonds weighing more than 10 carats.
Up until March 2016, 12,125 carats of Lulo diamonds were sold, generating a gross revenue of A$51.3million.
Angola is the world’s fourth biggest producers of diamonds by value, behind Russia, Canada and Botswana. In no particular order!
