One in a million: 100 million carat milestone for Rio Tinto
Rio Tinto has announced that the Canadian Diavik Diamond Mine has produced over 100 million carats of rough diamonds since it started operations.
Located in a subarctic lake, the Diavik Diamond Mine began operating in 2003 and is the largest diamond mine in Canada.
Simon Trott, Rio Tinto Diamonds, Salt & Uranium managing director, said “We are delighted to reach this milestone and I am enormously proud of the teams who have helped make this happen safely and responsibly in some of the harshest operating conditions in the world.”
The Diavik Diamond Mine has been commended for its boost for the local community, providing jobs and training opportunities.
