Residents block Peru copper mine
A key road to MMG Ltd’s Las Bambas copper mine has been blocked by residents of Andean communities in Peru, with the company forced to use an alternate route, the country’s ombudsman revealed this week.
The blockade comes after residents believe the road to pass through their lands and are asking the company to pay for using it.
A spokesperson from Las Bambas has confirmed to Reuters that the company is indeed using a different route but has addressed concerns of shipment delays, stating that the blockade has not affected its shipments of copper concentrates.
Following the details that Las Bambas produced around 32,9000 tonnes of copper in June, Peru is becoming the world’s second biggest copper producer this year, with a combination of Las Bambas and other new copper mines driving economic growth.
