A new initiative has been launched in South Africa in a bid to shine the spotlight on the significance of the mining sector in schools and educational organisations.

The Mining for Schools initiative was launched earlier this week through the Chamber of Mines South Africa as an online platform to provide resources for teachers and learners to reinforce, enhance and extend learning about the South African mining industry.

The website – www.mininggforschools.co.za – is designed as the go-to platform to support and promote the industry, through a series of online learning materials and resources which will be updated throughout the educational year.

To begin, the initiative will focus on all things gold mining and over time it will cover the broader resources and base metals space.

Mining has played a pivotal role in the country’s economic development and continues to do so to this day. In 2016, the mining industry contributed R304.4 billion to GDP; paid R3.7 billion in royalties; employed around 460,000 people (who supported around 4.5 million dependants); paid employees R120 billion in earnings; and spent R211.8 billion on goods and services.

This initiative comes as a direct result of an increased demand for materials and educational resources from teachers and learners throughout South Africa.

The Chamber of Mines of South Africa is a mining industry employers' organisation that supports and promotes the South African mining industry.

The Chamber's vision is to reposition ion South African mining as South Africa's foremost industrial sector. The Chamber seeks to create, in partnership with key stakeholders, a policy, legislative and operating environment that makes possible the doubling of real investment in mining by 2030.
