Worth their salt: Mine rescue volunteers the real winners as Goderich Mine victorious in mine rescue competition.
The Goderich Mine rescue team, part of the Compass Minerals company, took part in the 67th annual Provincial Mine Rescue Competition on June 10.
The team were crowned overall winners as well as winning the Team First Aid Award, with shaftman Drew Dalgleish placing second in the technician competition.
It was a successful day for Compass Minerals, as six other Ontario mines competed in a competition testing their firefighting skills, first aid response, use of emergency equipment and decision making under extreme conditions.
“Our team has put in long hours of training to ensure they are prepared for any challenges in the mine,” said Gerry Rogers, vice president of operations at Goderich Mine.
“The competition proves they are in top form, and walking away with the first place trophy is a great source of pride for the mine.”
The Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron in Ontario, is the largest underground salt mine in the world.
The success of the Goderich Mine Rescue team means they will compete in the 2016 International Mines Rescue Competition in Sudbury from Aug. 19-26.
It will be the first time the international event has been held in Canada.
