In May 2011, Arch Coal acquired International Coal Group Inc. for $3.4 billion in an all-cash deal. The purchase put Arch Coal on the map as the fourth-largest coal producer globally and the second-largest US producer of metallurgical coal. The acquisition also put Arch Coal as one of the top 10 suppliers to steelmakers in the world.
