Indonesia currently produces around four percent of the world’s gold production due in large part to the Grasberg mine. It is estimated the mine contains the world’s largest gold reserves (67.4 million ounces). Large scale mining companies operating in Indonesia include: Freeport McMoran (the majority owner of Grasberg), Newcrest Mining, and Newmont Mining Corp. (partial owner of the Batu Hijau mine). There are a total of seven mines currently in operation in Indonesia.
