Have you ever wondered what it looks like to transport and assemble the world’s largest mining excavator? You’re in luck.

Created in Colmar, France, Liebherr Mining takes us on a journey (in timelapse fashion) through land and sea to delivery their R 9800 excavator to the Moolarben Coal mine in Australia, including assembling the 800 ton hydraulic excavator from start to finish.

Interesting facts about the R 9800

• The Liebherr R 9800 has two 16-cylinder V-engines, each one with 1,492kW

• Because it has two engines running (Cummins 16V QSK 60 and MTU 12V 4000 series), the R 9800 requires 20,000 liters of diesel.

• Although Liebherr’s R 9800 is 30 percent bigger than the rest of its excavator models, it actually consumes only 15 percent more fuel.

• As the world’s largest mining excavator, Liebherr has taken special precaution to safety. The company has installed an array of safety features, including a secured stairway at the top structure, high railings on specific angles and an abundance of service lights positioned on every service point possible.
