Fluor Corporation delivers complex mining projects while prioritising sustainable performance across global operations and organisational efficiency

Fluor Corporation has established itself as a leading force in global engineering, procurement and construction, partnering with industry leaders across energy, infrastructure, life sciences, advanced technologies, mining, metals and government sectors to shape a better future.

Dating back to 1912, Fluor's team of nearly 27,000 professionals seeks to deliver safe, expertly executed and cost-effective technical solutions for clients worldwide, operating through the entire lifecycle of mining projects.

The firm announced mechanical completion in March 2024 on BASF SE's (BASF) Zhanjiang Verbund project in China – BASF's largest investment to date – delivering it alongside a safety record of more than 75 million work hours without a lost time injury.

"This milestone highlights Fluor's commitment to safe and quality execution on complex, world‑class chemical projects," says Pierre Bechelany, Fluor's Business Group President of Energy Solutions.

"I commend our teams and partners for their disciplined delivery and exceptional performance. We are honoured to support BASF's strategic growth in China with this new Verbund site project."

Environmental performance in mining operations

At the centre of Fluor's approach is its commitment to sustainability. Since establishing its global carbon footprint in 2006, the company has worked to track and reduce emissions throughout its operations.

According to company data, Fluor's combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 market-based greenhouse gas emissions totalled approximately 6,745 metric tonnes of CO₂ equivalent in 2024, representing a 44% reduction from the previous year. This builds on the 2023 milestone when Fluor reached Net Zero for operational emissions.

The company has implemented circular economy practices across its operations. Offices donate furniture and equipment to schools and non-profit organisations rather than sending them to landfills.

Energy reduction initiatives include installing solar panels, transitioning to LED lighting and switching to electric vehicles. These combined efforts resulted in significant reductions from 2023 to 2024: approximately 37,540 gigajoules in direct energy consumption, one million litres of fleet fuel and 29,000 gigajoules in indirect energy consumption.

Delivering complex mining projects

Fluor brings decades of experience delivering large-scale projects across global mining, metals and fertiliser sectors. The company says its integrated approach combines deep technical expertise across engineering, design, construction and operations.

Fluor's multidisciplinary engineering teams take a whole-of-mine perspective, identifying operational value drivers that deliver efficient, sustainable outcomes. The company has significant experience across commodities including copper, gold, iron ore, lithium, nickel, rare earth elements and critical minerals, as well as potash, phosphates and fertilisers.

The company's capability was demonstrated when it was awarded the Highland Valley Copper Mine Life Extension (HVC MLE) project near Logan Lake, British Columbia, Canada. This extension will push the mine's operational timeline from 2028 to 2046.

Harish Jammula, President of Fluor's Mining & Metals Business, says: "Fluor has worked on several projects at Highland Valley Copper and is looking forward to expanding its footprint in British Columbia, a key mining region with a long history of copper extraction.

"HVC MLE will strengthen Canada's critical minerals sector and help meet strong global demand for copper. Fluor's unmatched experience in large scale copper concentrators and our expertise in managing complex extensions, will be key to delivering this project."

Supply chain and local investment

Fluor says its commitment to building better communities extends to its supply chain practices. Operating in more than 40 countries, the company prioritises local procurement, with 86% of its US$9.5bn in 2024 commitments sourced from suppliers in the same country where goods are used or services rendered.

From 2014 to 2024, Fluor's supply chain organisation has partnered with more than 6,000 suppliers and contractors, managing over US$120bn in equipment, materials and services.
