The glass ceiling is alive and well but the mining industry is working to change that.

According to Australian Mines and Metals Association executive director Tara Diamond, there are now 37,000 women working across Australia's mining, oil and gas sectors.

While not the pace many expect, the global sector is steadily incorporating more and more women than ever before. An additional 1,800 women have joined since May 2013, boosting the female participation to 23.5%.

"If you give financial strength to women you are strengthening the family, the community and the nation,” AFRICAN Union (AU) Commission chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said last week at a Mining Lekgotla in Johannesburg, South Africa.

“Their money does not end in the handbag. It goes to education for the kids, it goes to shelter, to the community and even to their men."
