Newmont Mining signs three-year agreement for Project C.U.R.E

Newmont Mining continues to lead by example. The Colorado-based mining company announced yesterday a three-year agreement with Project C.U.R.E to provide $8 million in medical supplies to developing countries as well as life-saving training for health providers.

The partnership will see Newmont contribute $200,000 a year for the next three years towards the project, including exchanging health care knowledge, experience and contacts in Ghana, Indonesia, Peru and Suriname. In addition, Newmont Mining employees will continue to assist Project C.U.R.E by packing medical supplies and making special donations to local health facilities.

“Newmont is proud to continue its support for the life-saving work Project C.U.R.E. does in developing countries around the world,” said Elaine Dorward-King, Newmont’s Executive Vice President for Sustainability and External Relations.

“Our two organizations are aligned in purpose, and our partnership gives us the means to improve lives by equipping health care professionals with the resources, tools and training necessary to help people in need.”

As the largest provider of donated medical supplies and equipment to development countries, Project C.U.R.E is dedicated to bridging the health resource gaps around the world. The organization does so by empowering doctors and nurses with the tools needed to treat disease, deliver vaccines, perform surgery and provide safe childbirth.

Newmont has been actively involved in the Project C.U.R.E since 2004. The company has already contributed more than $1.2 million to the global health care efforts, including:

• Delivering nearly $9 million in medical supplies and training for health care personnel in Ghana, Guinea, Haiti, Indonesia, Peru and Suriname

• Donating critical support – including protective gear, isolation facilities and thermal scanners – to help combat the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease in West Africa

• Providing supplies for wound care and medical examinations at health facilities in Haiti during the cholera outbreak

• Supporting neonatal resuscitation training as part of a “Helping Babies Breathe” program, and sponsoring a four-day medical clinic for nearly 1,000 people near Newmont’s operations in Ghana

• Providing medical supplies to six health care facilities in Suriname near Newmont’s Merian project

“This partnership has really been a full integration of both of our organizations,” said Dr. Douglas Jackson, President/CEO of Project C.U.R.E. “The goal is to create infrastructure improvement, so that the whole system gets better. We want the employees at Newmont, the stakeholders and all the communities around the mine sites to be healthy.”
