China’s largest open-pit coal mine belongs to Haerwusu. Located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China, the mine is spread across the middle of the Zhungeer Coalfield and is estimated to contain 1.7 billion tons of coal reserves.

Owned and operated by Shenhua Group, the Haerwusu mine began production in October 2008, with development costs at approximately $1.1 billion. The giant open-pit mine is estimated to have a reserve life of more than 75 years, making it the number one coal mine in China.
